As the summer season’s social invitations begin to land on your doormat, eschew traditional dress codes in favour of cool modernity.
For fans of formal attire, standing on the cusp of a season of weddings, races, garden parties and balls presents opportunities for dressing up in abundance. SS14’s formal season requires a sartorial reset though, a rethink of all those dress codes so entrenched in each event’s DNA. Rather than looking to tried-and-tested tradition or even to trends, this season we are instead inspired by the constantly evolving relationship between the two.
Following the lead of our SS14 campaign, our creative team sought to reaffirm a sense of nostalgia with a firmly directional edge. So, to inspire our latest shoot, The Invitation, we headed to a modernist house, a place of shade and light, of clean, sharp lines but with nature all around.
Similarly our models’ relationship and destination is multifaceted. What is clear however is that styling and grooming for formal occasions has been reinvented. Hair is pushed back in tribute to retro-inspired grooming, however a slightly dishevelled finish lends a modern sensibility.
Meanwhile accessories are employed sparingly, but again these nod to the past, as is evident from the shape of our model’s sunglasses.
As is to be expected, tailoring features heavily, however unexpected combinations of colour, texture and fabric create a refreshed take on dressing for an occasion. Whether a shirt’s fine stripes sit next to a blazer’s subtle checks or tonal shades of the same hue sit alongside one another, pieces which alone may feel familiar take on a new sartorial role when styled for SS14.
Let formality be implied by your tailoring and make your choice of accessory be a subtle adornment rather than a sartorial focal point. For this look to a tonal tie or a scarf in a complimentary hue. Alternatively if the occasion will allow forgo traditional neckwear altogether. How to channel the most modern approach to occasion wear? Contrast the sharp lines of your suiting with the softer appeal of a buttoned up polo shirt.
