As the season to stay warm arrives on our shores, we make the case for the cosy charm of the rollneck.

With the change of season well and truly in full effect, the time to retire those short sleeves and dust off the warm-weather garms is now. I, for one, am thrilled at the prospect, often finding it difficult to dress smart while also staying comfortable during summer, especially one with such a prolonged heatwave (not to mention the added bursts of fiery hell from commuting on the Central Line).

While a rollneck may not seem like the most exciting addition to your wardrobe – held in undeserved regard as the sole symbol of, say, a stuffy art critic – there’s something quite special about its clean silhouette. The word “versatility” gets thrown around a lot when it comes to men’s clothing, and mostly for good reason, but if there is one winter staple that genuinely matches that sentiment it’s the rollneck. Here, I make the case for one of my favourite pieces of all time…

WEAR IT WITH A JACKET

Play up to the rollnecks’ association with all things winter by opting for one in a bordeaux colour. Marvellously tonal, it immediately elevates the elegance of the jumper while the flattering cut (thanks in large part to the elongating effect of the neckline) looks just as well worn with tailored trousers as it does with luxe sweat pants, were you so swayed in that direction. For extra sartorial points, find a matching jacket.

WEAR IT WITH A SHIRT

A rollneck may not immediately lend itself towards night-time dressing, but a printed shirt can bring a dramatic element to proceedings and give the knitted essential a little more relevance in a bar or club. Think of it a little as you would the mullet hair style: the rollneck suggests seriousness and good taste while the printed shirt alludes to your laid-back, fun side. A word of caution: you may end up quite hot if worn in a club, but at least you’ll look super cool, right?

Wear it with a suit

You’re rarely short of the sight of a man in a suit in London, but for a touch more verve replace the work shirt with a rollneck jumper. Rather than take away from the suit’s smartness, the inclusion of the rollneck adds height and structure for an overall more distinctive, distinguished look.
