Meet Gail Holland, our in-house womenswear stylist, as we talk travel, the campaign shoot and L.A. highlights.
What books did you read pre-trip for inspiration?
I dug out my Helmut Newton biography just before the trip, which is amazing. I’m also reading Patti Smith’s bio at the moment too.
What did you wear to the airport?
I wore the Reiss Lola knit in pale blue marl with a white tee from New York, a pair of black fluid vintage trousers, my Converse, a vintage leather handbag and Molecules perfume.
What are your travel essentials?
I think every girl’s (and some guy’s) staple – Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour cream, sleep mask, ear plugs, a big soft poncho – which looks like a horse blanket – from Topshop and Lavender oil (a few drops on bedding helps me to sleep).
What was on your L.A. soundtrack?
The Horrors, Florence and the Machine – Ceremonials, Kavinsky, Lana Del Ray, PJ Harvey, The Chromatics.
What films did you watch on the plane?
We Need to talk About Kevin, Midnight in Paris and Beginners.
Who are your L.A. icons?
The photographer, Amanda Marsalis, has a tumblr site which posts saturated fly-on-the-wall style shots which look retro at a glance but she’s cleverly played with colour. It reminds me of hot L.A. days.
What was your favourite L.A. moment?
Styling the shoot at such an amazing location – the Goldstein house.
What’s your favourite piece from the shoot?
The Lady printed silk blazer – it has such a great combination of prints, I would wear it with skinny jeans and a vest as a statement throw on.
What did you wear while in L.A.?
The Reiss Suki fluid denim trousers worn with ballet pumps and a tee or the white sleeveless Petuna Shirt and Lola knit.
What were your favourite meals in L.A.?
Fabulous fish at the Chateau Marmont, avocado and pancetta salad at The Ivy which was never ending! Steak mignon wrapped in parma ham with lentils at The Little Door – my first steak in over a year – and it was amazing, Taco Bell (had to be done) and french toast with turkey bacon and bananas at the Figtree, Venice Beach.
What were your favourite L.A. tipples?
The best coffee I’ve had in a while at Intelligencia in Abbott Kinney, A Vampire Cocktail at The Spare Room Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel which involved gin, soda, lime and jalapaneo.
Did you spot any celebs on your trip?
I spied Hugh Laurie on the flight to L.A. from Heathrow, Kid Cudi at the Roosevelt Hotel and Vampire Weekend by The Mondrian’s pool on my last day.
