NEVILLE: A GUIDE TO GROOMING

13.11.15

Once a man has perfected his grooming regime, he has all that he needs to face the day confidently. For The Collaborations we've partnered with grooming experts, Neville, whose products fuse the nostalgia-tinged tradition of the barber shop with the present day science of grooming. But, tools alone are not enough to achieve the ultimate grooming regime. We spoke to Neville’s Master Barber & Brand Manager, Tom Harrigan, to discover all of the tips and tricks used by the experts.

ON PRE AND POST GROOMING

Before you even think about shaving, lather up with a gentle cleanser to wash away dirt and debris, replenish lost moisture and fight skin dryness. Be sure to use warm water, which softens facial hair and opens pores for an easier shave.

To relieve any irritation and moisturise skin after shaving it's so important to finish your shave with a post-shave balm or tonic that will soothe your skin. Stick with alcohol-free products to avoid dryness. Do this and you will see significant changes in the overall condition and health of your skin.

ON FACIAL HAIR MAINTENANCE

A true hero product, we took a lot of time coming up with the formula for our Beard Grooming Oil. Our barbers in London were heavily involved in the testing, so when we got the thumbs up from them we knew that we had cracked it. The formula contains a blend of organic argan oil and grape seed oil which will soften, tame and hydrate. Its scent is a blend of bergamot and cedar wood.  Apply daily, ideally brushed through with a soft beard brush.

To tame your moustache, take a small amount of moustache shaping wax and heat it between your thumb and index finger. Apply from the middle of your moustache and work your way outwards, gently rolling the hair to achieve a good shape.

ON SHAVING WITH OIL AND CREAM

Neville Shave Cream was originally developed for our barbers who we regard as experts in shaving.  This cream contains the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of olive fruit and sesame seed, while vitamin B5 aids healing and organic aloe vera repairs and restores.

Before applying leave your shave bowl and brush in a sink of warm water so that it heats up a bit. Then massage the warm product into your beard and allow it to set for 1 - 2 minutes before you start. Apply in a circular motion to lift facial hairs and lessen irritation.

ON SHAVING THE TRADITIONAL WAY

A traditional shave brush will generate a thick lather for your shave. By moving in circular motions both clockwise and anti-clockwise, the brush will pull up any hairs lying flat to the skin, helping to achieve a closer shave.

A solid shave soap is very portable and dries off super-fast. This benefits the man who shaves every day and has a no-nonsense approach to his regime. Simply place the soap in the palm of your hand or in a shave bowl. Using a wet shave brush lather up the soap with circular motions. When finished rinse the soap under a cold tap and leave to dry.
