With summer in full swing and a clean living reminder on every Instagram page, Pinterest board and magazine article, we asked professional yoga teacher and personal trainer, Shona Vertue of Vertue Living for her top tips on leading – and maintaining – a healthy lifestyle. Here she unveils her mantras on diet, exercise, personal health and keeping a positive outlook. Not just for holiday season, these are rules to live by now and for years to come.

ON DIET

STOP CHEATING

I don’t believe in using the phrase ‘cheat meal’ or ‘cheat day’. We aren’t cheating on ourselves if we decide to enjoy the delicious thrills of chocolate or pizza. What my clients would have previously called a ‘cheat day’ is now called an ‘intuitive day’ – it’s a time to eat as your body asks. You’ll come to find that most of the time it will ask for something clean because it wants to keep you in a natural state of health.

ON EXERCISE

STOP DOING EXERCISE... THAT YOU HATE

If you find yourself hating your exercise routine, you’ve got to try something else. The notion that punishment is a part of fitness and/or health needs to change. Your body will respond better to happy hormones and you’ll be more likely to keep it up and reach your goals.

ON SLEEP

SLEEPING BEAUTY

If your sleep is deprived, your health and fitness goals – whether aesthetic or internal – will be deprived. It’s at this time that we become fitter, stronger and leaner. If you have trouble winding down take magnesium citrate and herbal valerian before bed, but be sure to check with your doctor before adding supplements to your diet.

ON POSITIVITY

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

Not only are positive affirmations #trending on Instagram, they are also imperative for any transformation. In order to see changes in your health you have to fully believe in your ability. Develop a sense of self worth by acknowledging that you’re grateful for the body that you have. If you respect your body, you will be more likely to eat right and move more – it really is that simple.
