04.07.15

With the summer in full swing, there is no better time to to head for Great Britain's great lidos for a spot of swimming al fresco. But which outdoor pools lay claim to being the UK's best? Discover our favourite places to take a dip.

CLIFTON LIDO, BRISTOL

The Clifton Lido has existed in the centre of Bristol for over 100 years, and thanks to a recent refurbishment, it continues to be a popular destination to head to when the sun shines on this West Country city. Though the 299 square yard heated pool is undoubtedly the main attraction, the surrounding restaurant, spa, sauna, hot tub and steam room ensure that the destination offers a thoroughly modern take on the Great British lido.

PARLIAMENT HILL LIDO, LONDON

Set at the south of Hampstead Heath's sprawling grassy expanse, Parliament Hill Lido offers rural respite from London's cosmopolitan buzz, despite still being centrally located. The Grade II-listed lido is the only outdoor UK pool to boast a stainless steel pool liner - giving the body of water a metallic sheen - and retains the lido's original Art Deco design features. Even better, the lido is within walking distance of Hampstead Heath's much-loved swimming ponds should you fancy a change of scenery as you swim.

TINSIDE POOL, PLYMOUTH

Looking onto the sea from the tip of Plymouth's Hoe park, lidos don't come much more spectacular than Tinside Pool. And, this fact is attested to by the lido's inclusion on a list of 10 top outdoor swimming spaces in Europe. While the striped pool lining and central fountain go some way to adding to the grandeur of this revived 1930s swimming spot, the unbroken panoramic views ahead are unrivalled in their magnificence.

NANTWICH OUTDOOR BRINE POOL, NANTWICH

Heated and filled with salty brine water from a source underground, Nantwich Outdoor Brine Pool is one of the very last examples of a Victorian outdoor swimming tradition. The salty water which fills the lido's pool is thought to boast medicinal qualities and adds extra buoyancy for swimmers.
