There are few essential trouser types which every man needs in his wardrobe. From chinos to jeans and even cords, stride through your weekend with sartorial ease, as we highlight our must-have trousers for AW12.

Coloured Chinos

The chino love affair continues this season, but it's time to swap classic stone for rose. Offering a great alternative to summer's lighter shades, wear these autumnal chinos with a denim shirt and a chunky knit for an off-duty look with a splash of colour.

Our guy wears:  Farrow cardigan, Zackery denim shirt, Chaplin chinos, and Orlando boots.

Heritage Cords

Cords have been off the style radar for a while, but in a season where heritage inspiration is so strong, it's the perfect time to re-discover. Wear them with a similarly 'heritage' colour palette; forest green, chestnut and smoky grey all work nicely.

Our guy wears: Milano blazer, Alloy pocket square, Toutley knit, Brightling cords and Clements shoes.

Houndstooth Trousers

Slightly smarter and a touch quirkier, houndstooth checks continue the heritage theme. Wear them with a velvety-soft suede bomber jacket and lightest grey sweatshirt to off-set the country feel with something a little sportier and city-appropriate.

Our guy wears: Cromwell jacket, Bruno sweatshirt, Hush trousers and Bologne shoes.

Selvedge Denim

We posted about our admiration for selvedge at the start of the season, so it's no surprise these jeans have made their way into our essential hit list. Roll the cuffs to expose that desirable red tab and wear them with a suede brogue boot and textured socks.

Our guy wears: Canyon blazer, Knight knit, Freeport selvedge jeans and Orlando boots.
