MWD: MOST STYLISH SUNGLASSES

10.06.14

The matter of choosing the correct pair of sunglasses is no easy task. Shades which can look so effortlessly cool on one man have the ability to look hopelessly misguided on another. With frame size, shape and colour (along with your own proportions) to contend with, choosing the perfect pair is no mean feat. To that end, this week’s Menswear Diaries sheds light on selecting the nattiest shades to suit you.

COMBINATION SUNGLASSES

Thanks to their fusion of square angles and curved edges, glasses which combine shapes (such as Wayfarer sunglasses) tend to be universally flattering. The main thing to bear in mind is the overall size of the frames, with smaller designs complementing smaller head shapes and conversely larger frames tending to be more flattering on larger head shapes.

ROUND SUNGLASSES

As perfectly circular sunglasses have the tendency to veer perilously close to '70s costume, think slightly ovular when selecting your shades. Street clear of rounded sunglasses if your face shape leans towards a circular shape; this style works best on those with an angular or square face shape.

SQUARE SUNGLASSES

Most suited to those with an oval or round face shape, the bold lines of square sunglasses can add sharp definition to softer features. Best worn in plain black, squared sunglasses offer heavy, masculine design.

COLOURED SUNGLASSES

The most stylish colour for frames this season? None at all. Clear acetate sunglasses have usurped tortoiseshell's brown and honeyed ubiquity to become the most coveted style this summer. N.b. this style works best offset by a tanned complexion, so for lighter skin tones try a slightly coloured frame.
