MWD: TRENDS TO TRY NOW

23.05.14

Want to know which trends to try now? This week's Menswear Diaries discusses our very favourite men's SS14 trends.

ANKLES EXPOSED

Exposed ankles have become such an omnipresent part of the menswear landscape for summer during the past five or so years, it seems rather underreaching to call exposed ankles a trend.

Nevertheless, though this 'trend' may not be new, we're well and truly sold on its sartorial benefits. Whether wearing chinos, jeans, tailored trousers, or even shorts, where possible this season we're still giving socks the short shrift.

CUBAN COLLAR COOL

We've been championing the Cuban collar shirt as our style of the season, for good reason too. The natural progression from last year's updated Hawaiian shirt, the style offers endless versatility. Whether worn centre stage with swim shorts on days by the pool or worn with a summer suit for a formal occasion, the Cuban collar shirt's style credentials for SS14 couldn't be higher.

SMART MEETS CASUAL

As menswear’s increasing fascination with all things streetwear grows, fashionable men should be concerning themselves with the matter of how to best interpret this trend whilst retaining an air of sartorial sharpness. We’re tempering the relaxed aesthetic of trainers and tees by pairing them with tailored trousers and structured overcoats for a ‘smart meets casual’ look.

FADE AWAY

The most fashionable way to go two-tone this season? Ombre fade. We recommend limiting this trend to your top half only, and pairing with relatively plain trousers to keep things on the right side of tasteful.

SPORTING PURSUITS

Take inspiration from the world of sports for SS14's leisurely days. Whether in tennis-inspired Jack Purcell trainers, a luxe take on the baseball cap or in a smart take on jogging bottoms, sometimes comfort and cool make the perfect pairing.

SOFTER SUMMER SUITING

For this season's lighter days, your dark navy suiting simply won't cut it. Go a shade lighter, and get experimental with texture and finish. For this look to subtle checks, flecked fabrics or pocket squares and ties in a variety of summery shades.
