From the front line to the catwalk, war has had an enormous influence on men’s fashion throughout the years. Originally designed simply with practicality in mind, military clothing now regularly reemerges as a key trend in fashion. For AW12, army-influenced style is one of the most significant in menswear.

Epaulets, aviator glasses, duffle coats and camouflage are all attributes of military attire that have made their way into our wardrobes over the years. However it was during World War I when a truly iconic piece of outerwear first became established: the trench coat.

Originally developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats donned by British and French soldiers, the invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum. The latter’s claim dates back to the 1850s, whereas Thomas Burberry presented a design for an army officer’s coat to the UK War Office in 1901.

The trench coat soon became an outerwear option of choice in the British Army, before going through countless reinventions throughout the years. Get your hands on our Jeymer short trench to channel vintage military style with a contemporary edge.

Another piece of outerwear with military heritage, is the timeless pea coat. Typically crafted from 30 ounces of wool, the pea coat was originally designed to keep sailors warm at sea by retaining their body heat. Find out more about the pea coat's fascinating history in last week's blog post, and invest in a style of your own here.

Military in Music

Military style cropped up in menswear countless times throughout the decades post-WWII, often through the help of musical icons. From The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to Adam Ant and Michael Jackson, military jackets have been continuously worn by superstars from the 1960s to present date.

AW12 & Beyond

This season, military fashion has once again marched into the spotlight, particularly when it comes to outerwear. Broad shoulders, olive hues and 1940s-inspired designs are all essential factors of this trend, with style and practicality standing perfectly side by side.
