Ever since its birth back in 1928 when Irving Schott designed the first motorcyle jacket for Harley Davidson, the world has been hooked on this zip-up leather. Fast forward to Debbie Harry rocking a sleeveless version in the Seventies via the Hollywood boys of the Fifties/Sixties (Brando, Dean and McQueen) offering up its iconic status, the moto is cemented forever in style.
There's no doubt that the moto jacket is something of a style icon. Since its creation it has made quite an impression on the fashion world, and has graced the wardrobes of its most coveted guys and girls. Heavily influencing the outerwear in our AW13 womenswear collection, we take a closer look at this familiar jacket and check out what's new.
This season though, despite our continued love for leather, we're branching out into unexpected fabrics. The short wool-rich jackets in our AW13 outerwear collection have taken a diversion from feminine fit and flare styles and classic peacoats and have been given the moto treatment. With zips, wide collars and asymmetric fastenings, these hybrid jackets are the perfect update on such a well-known piece.
Of course, we still love a leather moto (just like Kate), so haven't turned our backs on the original. We have given it a bit of a twist though; you'll find quilting detail to the shoulders, touches of shearling and voluptuous fur trims all adding to the season's love for texture.
