TOP 5: BEST DRESSED DUOS

05.02.16

Enduring love may not have been destined for all of our best dressed duos, but each of the inclusions on our list displays an understanding of the importance of putting on a united front through their wardrobe choices.

JANE BIRKIN & SERGE GAINSBOURG

Few romantic pairings today can match the sheer intrigue generated by the union of English beauty Jane Birkin and her creative (his list of accomplishments are too numerous to list) French lover Serge Gainsbourg.

Part of the reason why this coupling is just as compelling now as it was all those decades ago is a mutual appreciation of great style. Birkin's striking beauty was by only enhanced by her off-beat approach to dressing while Gainsbourg's ability to wear anything effortlessly (must be that French je ne sais quoi) showed that conventional good looks are no pre-requisite for looking frustratingly cool at all times.

Granted, their relationship may have been countless times described as turbulent, but as a ream of nostalgia-tinged photographs document, their style was perfectly harmonious.

HELEN LASICHANH & PHARRELL WILLIAMS

It takes a formidable presence to look like more than a bystander when positioned next to Pharrell Williams, but that's exactly what designer and model Helen Lasichanh deftly does.

Pharrell's ability to wear potentially divisive clothing well (the jury's still out on that hat) is echoed by Helen's style ethos which similarly favours experimental choices.

Any couple who are able to pull of double denim (quadruple denim by proxy) with their sartorial credentials intact are deserving of our respect.

JOANNE WOODWARD & PAUL NEWMAN

Paul Newman is still lauded as one of menswear's most stylish dressers ever and continues to inform the way men dress even now. How does such a skilled dresser seem even more impeccably attired? Enter actress Joanne Woodward who was married to the actor for 50 years until his death in 2008.

Both classically good-looking, both immensely talented and both the owners of a stellar sense of style, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman may just have been the very first template of how to dress to perfection, together.

JOHNNY DEPP & KATE MOSS

Johnny Depp and Kate Moss' romance may have been lesser publicised than each's subsequent liaisons (and a surprising revelation to anyone born after the millennium) but in their four years together during the nineties they committed to celluloid some memorable sartorial outings.

In keeping with the style of the time, this pair were all sharp cheekbones, ghostly pallor and head-to-toe black. Tim Burton would approve.

DAVID & VICTORIA BECKHAM

No list of well-dressed duos would be complete without David and Victoria Beckham who practically invented the art of dressing well together (with a few notable missteps on the way).

In-between racking up various accolades for their individual contributions to style, this well turned out duo are mentioning their children to develop the same love of style. Brand Beckham looks set to be potent then for some time yet.
