As Milan Fashion Week draws to a close, we look to fashion photographer, prolific blogger and style icon Berta Bernad for a shot of inspiration on how to dress now in Italy’s most stylish city. Here she shares her fashion week essentials, go-to hotspots and top tips for outfit planning during the event.

Tying seamlessly with the season’s softer tailoring focus, Berta showcases the trouser suit’s new incarnations by styling it with an elegant champagne-hued coat. Balancing a decidedly feminine outerwear piece with patent leather flats in the morning and a chunky block heel for the afternoon’s show round-up, Berta gives the traditionally polished two-piece a boyish ease that’s personable, easy to wear and ever-so relevant.

What are your top 3 Fashion Week essentials?

A huge coat, trainers and big sunglasses.

In three words, describe the atmosphere in Milan during Fashion Week.

Fun, colourful and inspiring.

How do you go about planning your Fashion Week looks?

It’s like dressing for a special party – you get to select all your favourite wardrobe pieces. I usually select my outfits depending on the day, the weather and the agenda. If I’m going to stay out all day I'll wear flats but I always make sure I take heels for the after-show parties.

What is your must-have piece this season?

A proper suit.

Who is your ultimate fashion inspiration?

Amanda Brooks.

Which show are you most looking forward to and why?

Jil Sander. I love their fashion campaigns and her clothes.

What are your local hotspots?

Hambistro for lunch and Temakino and Ceresio 7 for dinner.

How do you like to wind down post fashion week rush?

I find playing the piano the perfect way to relax, and I love going for dinner with my friends to catch up after a busy week.
