The mark that the Roaring Twenties left on the world of fashion is undeniably paramount. Whether it’s through vintage-inspired trends such as military menswear, or simply the cuts and colours of traditional tailoring – the spirit of the 20s lives on. For AW12 however, the nod to this bygone era is far less subtle. Perhaps influenced by the revival of the 1920s in film and television, we can’t get enough of this timeless style in men’s fashion. We take a look at some recent films and television programmes that may have influenced the revival of the gentleman.

The Artist

Last year’s award-winning blockbuster The Artist paved the way for a 1920’s fashion revival. Set in the late 20s and early 30s during the golden era of classic men’s style, the film nods back to the black and white silent film genre.

When it comes to men’s fashion in The Artist, the film’s costume designers have obviously stayed true to the era and dressed the characters in tuxedos and tailcoats. Lead character George Valentin is mainly seen kitted out in period eveningwear that has us wanting to reach for a traditional tux and bow tie when heading to our next formal event. This film is an absolute must-see for every sartorial squire.

Boardwalk Empire

Another successful throwback that premiered last year is Sky Atlantic’s Boardwalk Empire. The super stylish period crime drama sees men clad in thick tweeds and three-piece suits; perfect for the Roaring Twenties trend.

Designed by John Dunn and tailored by Martin Greenfield, Boardwalk Empire’s costumes were based on 1920s tailoring books. The meticulously detailed designs include a collar pin for Nucky’s shirts and specially ordered wools for suiting.

The Great Gatsby

Originally meant to have been showing this Christmas, Baz Luhrmann’s 3D film adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby will now grace our silver screens next summer. Starring both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, the long-awaited trend has already had huge influence over the world of fashion simply through its stills and trailer that’s been released.

Licked hair, high-waisted slacks and double-breasted suits are all set to play crucial parts in Luhrmann’s super stylish blockbuster. Gents, prepare to go back in time...
