My Life in London: Richard Biedul

19.04.17

Model Richard Biedul talks personal style, his favourite haunts and why he’s proud to call London home

Those who aren’t familiar with the name Richard Biedul may be more well-acquainted with his face. As a model and a regular fixture on London’s menswear scene, Richard is a familiar sight on the front rows of fashion shows, in magazines and indeed on the streets of London.

And, if you ever find yourself in the capital it won’t be hard to spot this solicitor turned model. Confidently turning his hand to everything from pinstripes to coloured corduroy, his authentically unique take on style goes a long way to dispel any notion that one must be strait-laced to have practiced law. Then, there’s Vinnie (his 8 month old miniature daschund) who manages to command just as many admiring glances as Richard himself.

We joined Richard and Vinnie in London’s Soho to talk style, where to go when you’re in town and everything in between.

ON WHY HE LOVES LONDON'S SOHO DISTRICT

Whilst Soho has undergone massive gentrification in recent years (which has seen the demise of many of the things I hold dear) the area still maintains a certain je ne sais quoi. It remains a melting pot of art, culture and sexuality where community comes first.

One of my favourite things about Soho is the sense of familiarity - I'm on first name terms with my barista, bartender and barber.

THE DELICATESSEN: LINA STORES

Lina Stores is one of the worst best kept secrets in Soho. Amazing food, amazing coffee and an amazing location! This Italian delicatessen is as beautiful inside as is it out.

Pastel colours are again hugely popular this season. Whether you choose to colour block or colour match, dress up or down, a pastel suit is an investment that will serve you well past spring into the summer.

THE COFFEE SHOP - FLAT WHITE

Flat White is situated in the middle of Berwick Street Market (and to describe the shop as busy would be an understatement). My favourite coffee is served by my favourite musician come barista, Harry. The staff are without fail friendly and welcoming and (most importantly) always happy to see Vinnie!

I'm a huge fan of tonal dressing. This suit, shirt and tie combination offers a smart summer alternative to the traditional blue/grey working uniform. Wear with brogues to add a sense of formality or white trainers for a more relaxed feel.

THE PUB - THE SUN & 13 CANTONS

My friend Pasqual has run The Sun & 13 Cantons for nearly 14 years. This was one of the first pubs my friends and I started to frequent when we first discovered Soho back in the early 00s. Whilst the clientele, drinks and food served have changed over the years, the one thing that has remained the same is the quality of service!

A pinstripe suit is for life, not just the boardroom. For a more casual spin, replace a shirt and tie with a cardigan and neck scarf then finish your look with the blazer worn open and some fresh white trainers.

THE BARBERS - JOE AND CO.

Joe of Joe and Co. is my go-to male grooming expert! I've worked with Joe many times in the past on a vast range of projects and whenever I'm in Soho I make a point of visiting the store to see him, whether it be for a beard trim, a coffee or an old fashioned.

When wearing white on your bottom half your first reference should always be The Talented Mr Ripley’s Dickie Greenleaf. Couple some white jeans with a Cuban collar shirt or a button down cardigan.  Finally, suede slip-on loafers or trainers make this the perfect summer outfit.

THE GALLERY - LIGHTS OF SOHO

Without a shadow of a doubt, the head barman of Lights of Soho, Jerome, makes the best spiced margarita this side of Tijuana. It’s important to remember that Lights of Soho is primarily an art gallery, but it’s also my first and last stop on a night out in Soho as it remains one of the only dog friendly venues.

RICHARD’S 5 STYLE RULES TO LIVE BY

1. Invest in the classics, they never go out of style. Make sure that you have an overcoat that gives you a slimline silhouette, a suit from Savile Row and classic dress shoes.

2. Find a good tailor. Let's be honest, who has the budget to wear bespoke every day? Find something off-the-peg and have it altered to fit you perfectly! Invest in the fit and nobody will be able to tell if the suit is high end or high street.

3. Accessories maketh the man. If approached with subtlety, tie bars, cufflinks, and pocket squares will add an air of sophistication to your look.

4. Every man should own a watch which reflects his personality. The perfect timepiece will be with you for the rest of your life!

5. If you like it, wear it! Who gives a damn what anyone else thinks!
