It’s that time of year when a layered look becomes the everyday go-to and rightly so. But this season, in a bid to re-shape what we see as essentials, we celebrate the pieces that promise set the tone for a beautifully considered winter wardrobe and make light work of layering.
Think essentials first, layering second
A SIMPLE STATEMENT
Sometimes it’s the most timeless of capsule wardrobe pieces that make the strongest statement and when they’re worn together there’s little more polished aesthetically. Look to items that feature layering aspects within the design such as a coat with a removable faux-fur collar or a dress with graphic cut-away detailing to master modern minimalism. Varying hemlines also add an element of surprise without compromising on sleek simplicity.
ALL BLACK EVERYTHING
A black blouse is the epitome of capsule wardrobe dressing but this season’s design-led styles come spliced with subtle graphic cut-outs and finished with feminine scalloped edging. Game changer. Not only a statement stand-alone piece but a style that lends itself perfectly to layering as well, repurpose it to work for everything from your most important meeting (styled with a checked pencil skirt and court shoes) to Christmas Day (with statement trousers and an oversized knit).
IT'S ALL IN THE DETAIL
The attention is in the detail of this season’s key pieces and layering comes in subtle new ways that add interest to an otherwise classic look. Think delicate bows, subtle pleating and artful drapery, all applied to shirting and dresses to give a layered illusion without the extra bulk. Textural elements like a shearling collar and leather accents maintain a luxe aesthetic whilst a monochromatic palette keep things clean-cut.
Layering is nothing new but the simplest way to update the look is to choose tonal separates and wear them with confidence. Pick your favourite hue from the AW17 spectrum and commit. Dusky blush pink makes for an unexpected winter option that lends classic pieces – namely an oversized knit and a knife-pleat midi skirt – a sense of modernity. Where possible, take the shade through to outerwear as well.
A TOUCH OF LACE
When it comes to finding the perfect lace dress, there’s a lot to be said for choosing something that will not only work for just about any event in your winter calendar but that will transcend seasons too, so don’t eschew the idea of a sleeveless style in sub-zero temperatures. The addition of a sharply cut tuxedo blazer in black will feel appropriately evening-ready but drape a longline coat over your shoulders and add a faux-fur stole to brave the chill as you move from car to canopy.
