Too many times an otherwise perfectly good outfit is ruined by a failure to pay proper attention to footwear. As if poorly-chosen shoes aren’t enough of a sartorial mood-killer on their own, if not cared for (which too many men are guilty of) they effectively destroy any claim to possessing a sound sense of style. To ensure that the rest of your outfit is adequately supported, we’ve selected five of AW16's most foolproof footwear designs.

THE TOE CAP DERBY SHOES
The ideal dress shoes are hard to find, but once you’ve found the perfect pair they can be hard to let go of, even when they’re irreparably well worn. If you need to add a pair to your collection (or just really, really want to) our tip for the season ahead is Derbies with toe caps. Suitably formal, but with just enough detail to keep things interesting, they’ll pair handsomely with charcoal, black or navy tailoring.
WEAR THEM WITH
THE JODHPUR BOOTS
There’s something timelessly appealing about equestrian inspired style, and luckily you don’t have to go within distance of a paddock to wear the highlights this season. Suede jodhpur boots offer a refined way to nod to riding style. How to pull off wearing a pair? When in doubt, always team with slim-fitting trousers.
THE LACE-UP SNEAKERS
White sneakers have usurped brown brogues to become 2016’s ‘shoe that can be worn with absolutely everything’. This season though, they’re less worn-in staple, more discreet sportswear-inspired luxury. So, choose leather instead of canvas and look for subtle design detail (such as a suede heel tab) for an elevated take on a menswear staple. We reccomend wearing with a grey sweatshirt and navy chinos for sharp weekend style.
THE DOUBLE MONK STRAP SHOES
Relaxed yet refined, sophisticated yet modern, there’s practically no criterion double monk strap shoes don’t meet. For the man fatigued by pared-back dress shoes, double monk strap shoes are an elegantly buckled alternative. Even better, if you opt for a pair of double monk strap shoes this season (we’re plumping for brown suede) their versatility means that you can be sure that your cost per wear figure will be reassuringly low. Although double monk strap shoes are naturally well suited to tailoring, they’ll really come into their own when worn with tailored navy chinos, a white crew-neck t-shirt and a blue suede bomber jacket.
the chelsea boots
At approximately the same time as autumn’s first leaves hit the ground, so too do a whole fleet of Chelsea boots. Always appealing and the natural go-to when heading out on weekend walks, Chelsea boots have rightfully earned their place in the footwear collections of well-heeled men. If you’re not on board yet, what are you waiting for? They may be a seasonal staple for autumn/winter, but when taken in sand suede they’re anything but predictable. Our favourite way to wear for AW16 is with indigo jeans, a checked shirt and a tan shearling jacket.
