We speak to David Delport from REN Clean Skincare, our Personal Approach partner, about how to switch up our skincare routine in time for wedding season

What is your role at REN Clean Skincare?

I am the Head of Education and brand spokesperson.

REN Clean Skincare specialises in a vast range of products. What are your must-have items?

This is a tough one. I’m a real product junkie and will often layer several things together in quick succession. I get the luxury of having the entire range at my disposal so it’s a case of analysing my skin and deciding it what it needs on the day. I consider my products like the elements of a tool kit and I’m always experimenting with different combinations.

If I had to narrow it down to the essentials, they would be: Rosa Centifolia Gel Cleanser, Bio Retinoid Concentrate Oil, Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask and V-Cense Day Cream. They are my skin security blanket, especially when it comes to travelling.

Should we be adapting our skincare routine in line with the weather?

I don’t find the transition from winter to spring as tough as I do from autumn to winter but for now, I’ll be upping my exfoliation routine. The Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask and Radiance Perfection Serum are a powerful duo for reviving skin energy.

How would you suggest best phasing in new products to your skincare routine, or is it ok to completely switch it up in one go?

This is dependent on skin sensitivity. REN is clean-formulated which means that we use skin-friendly ingredients at levels that are effective without the potential for any cross-reaction. I often swap the products that I’m using on a whim and can usually guage how my skin is reacting to it within a day or so. Be your own judge – everyone’s skin is unique.

Wedding season is fast approaching. How best can guests and bridal party prep their skin?

I am a makeup artist so I understand how important good skin is for the big day. It’s always a huge consideration for the client. I always want skin to be as perfect as possible and to use as little foundation and concealer as I can get away with so I recommend a program of skin renewal prior to the event. The night before the big day I would recommend using the Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask followed by the Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial the next morning.

Prior to makeup application I would prep skin with the Evercalm Range to buffer against makeup sensitivity, and would definitely use the Keep Young and Beautiful Instant Firming Beauty Shot Face and Eyes, which gives instant lift and smoothing that lasts for 8 hours. The beauty of these is that you can re-apply these over makeup for a refresher. My clients swear by it and it keeps skin from looking tired through what can be a very long day.

How far in advance should we be prepping our skin?

If you’re in a good routine you don’t need the prep. It surprises me when a bride realises with just a week to spare that her skin could look healthier. Considering average cell turnover is around 28 days, you’d realistically need at least that to make a real difference. Fortunately we have powerful masks and serums which can turn things around very quickly. It’s amazing what you can do in 15 minutes.

Post event, how should we be caring for our skin?

Double cleanse! Leaving makeup and pollution on skin causes free radical damage and accelerates ageing and can make skin look grey and dull. At REN, we have recently launched the Evercalm Ultra Comforting Rescue Mask which is the perfect post-stress treatment. The reviews so far are incredible. It’s one of those products you don’t think you’ll need until you really need it. It’s great for redness, flare-ups and sun burn and my top tip is to keep it in the fridge.
