The most covetable looks of SS17 as dictated by the New York Fashion Week street style stars
RETURN OF THE MAC
The classic trench coat is our go-to for outerwear that never disappoints and it’s the perfect way to play down trends if bold styling isn’t your usual aesthetic. For a relevant twist, take inspiration from Net-A-Poter’s Retail Fashion Director, Lisa Aiken and go long when it comes to silhouette. Ankle-grazing styles work particularly well with heels and keep things overtly sophisticated. Less is more when it comes to structure and this season’s relaxed cuts fare particularly well layered atop chunky knitwear now and more lightweight tops in warmer climes.
Whilst there remains a place in any denim line-up for a classic skinny blue jean, this season’s focus takes a shift into somewhat more contemporary terrain with straight-leg styles becoming the new norm. Turned up or cut to showcase an artfully frayed hem, this retro revival emits a certain effortlessness that can be dressed up or down depending on your diary. Inspired by show attendees, our styling tips read to team yours with oversized shirting in pinstripes or denim for a masculine edge. Add a structured blazer or a sleeveless jacket for a polished final touch à la American actress Greta Gerwig.
Small in size but mighty in impact, not only do mini bags make an appearance in our SS17 Trend Report but we’ve spotted New York Fashion Week’s style set championing the look more so than ever this season. The bonus here is that it’s perhaps the easiest of our round-up to adopt. Take your cue from one of the industry’s most influential editors, Caroline Issa and wear cross-body styles layered underneath outerwear for maximum style credentials. Edit your everyday essentials right down or alternatively swing an additional slouchy tote over your shoulder but keep this hero accessory the focus of your look.
If the streets of NYFW are to be believed (and we’re convinced they’re the most reliable source of this season to date) then white trousers are trending in a big way. Tailored styles offer something wonderfully polished and when cropped to the ankle, they take on a spring-ready slant. Go bold and style them with a similarly bright blazer and black shoes or layer darker neutrals on top to keep things a little more weather appropriate.
Despite winter’s bite still being very much in the air, there was a defiant effort when it came to representing the modern romance trend that we outlined within our SS17 Report. Lightweight fabrications in soft hues become all the more wearable now when teamed with leather and suede and tonal styling is key to perfecting this look. Take your cue from the likes of Tamara Kalinic from The Glam and Glitter and keep outerwear close at hand but be sure to tie it in with your colour scheme to keep the overall aesthetic fresh.
