As a new season dawns and we start to shift our styling focus to a host of fresh opportunities, it’s easy to persuade ourselves that a complete wardrobe re-vamp is not only doable but necessary. For now, however, why not focus on adopting small but effective ways of elevating your existing wardrobe to make a sleek transition into spring? Here, we list a few styling tricks that will fast-track your go-to looks into premium territory and transform classic combinations into something suddenly trend-focused.

1. BELT IT

It’s no secret or new revelation that a sculptural belt will add considered detail to your look, be it a narrow design that nips in the waist of a languid silk shirt dress or this season’s covetable chunky iterations that make an ultra-flattering addition to blazers, outerwear and oversized knits. The new rules of layering? Fasten the belt atop a scarf worn draped around the neck to lend this time-tested look a seasonal update and pull everything together in a way that suddenly seems just that little bit more premium.

2. LAYER UP

The idea of layering holds limitless opportunities with regards to styling, from the go-to open mac over silk shirting to this season’s new riff; the top-under-leather-under-outerwear look. Start with a breezy, languid base layer, preferably in a muted metallic fabrication that contradicts smooth leather, and add a wool-mix coat for a striking mix of tactility. For added impact, pile on fine-chain necklaces – it’s a small yet effective final touch.

3. CHOOSE A BLAZER WITH BLACK BUTTONS

Blazers are arguably the number one quick-win when it comes to dressing up an otherwise understated look and they’re also one of the most polished wardrobe investments that you can make. But there’s a small yet effective styling trick that will elevate your look in the subtlest manner and that’s the addition black buttons. Against pale-grey, this seemingly discreet design feature offers stark contrast, highlights craftsmanship (double breasted designs, fitted waists, subtle checks) and secure the look as something just as well-suited to off-duty dressing as formal affairs.

4. WEAR HEAD-TO-TOE TONAL HUES

Tonal styling remains a major player in the trend game for SS18 and it’s arguably one of the most covetable ways to make a statement, minimum effort required. What’s more? Choosing one colour and committing to it means that it’s the shade you’ve chosen that will steal focus as opposed to anything else. Experiment with silhouette and combine textures and print as well as tone for a chic and premium-looking take on new-season styling. For now, we’re in favour of dark shades teamed with spring-appropriate dusky pinks – it’s a combination that feels altogether appropriate as we make the seasonal transition.

5. ADD STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

It’s common knowledge that accessories are the genre to invest in if you’re looking to elevate every single outfit that you wear. A bag and shoes are both necessary just about every day, after all. This season’s bag designs place particular focus on craftsmanship, quality of leather and unexpected design details, all of which will subtly elevate any outfit merely by being there. Statement shoes are also a sure way to personalise something classic and SS18’s offering boasts soft suede styles spliced with mesh inserts and polished leather ankle boots that whilst effortless, can make all the difference.
