The Reiss Camp-Collar Shirt

07.05.21

The cuban or camp-collar shirt is a Reiss summer staple that we reinterpret each year in new bold prints and luxurious fabrications.

Reiss often features in round-ups of the best shirts around. Indeed, we are “one of the original advocates of the Camp-collar renaissance.” There’s no question our camp-collar shirts are well-loved, so we wanted to do our very own tribute to the style.

Let’s start with what it is. With short sleeves, a straight hem and a more open collar, the camp-collar shirt sends out a relaxed vibe. At times printed, but not always, it is a fashion piece and a timeless staple all at the same time. Casual, clean-cut, flattering and utterly versatile.

It’s worth noting that around the world, the camp collar is also known as a Cuban collar, open collar, spread collar and revere collar (with minor differences in construction, if any).

For Reiss, refined yet graphically bold prints sit alongside minimal options inspired by the cities we love. Camp-collared looks must have the sheer fun factor built within, not just the fashion element. When it comes to colour, they come in anything from classic black to crisp white, refined pewter and Airforce blue.

This season patterns and prints range from the Patois, a Hawaiian-style print in brown and an array of greens, to the graphic Uptown, a geometric display of zigzag and diamond. Reiss introduces artistic beach scenes, abstract watercolour designs, plus medallion prints in the iconic white and blue combination. Naturally, there are stripes, whether pinstripe style or vintage-inspired.

As for fabrication, only the very best lightweight materials will do. We craft ours in soft Tencel blends, pure cotton, viscose and linen.

So, where did the design originate? This camp-collar style dates back to the 18th century in South America, entering the fashions’ market further afield by the early 1900s. Elvis Presley was a fan, as was the guy next door – because laidback camp-collar shirts rose to widespread prominence come the 50s. Gentlemen turned to soft cotton and contrast piping for their summer-ready wardrobes.

By the 1970s, David Bowie was spotted in his camp-collared-shirt ensembles. There’s something about the designs which find that perfect sweet spot between smart and casual. They work with chinos, shorts, tailoring and even jeans.

It was already the 2020s when Harry Styles has proven how the piece, steeped in history, can be modern. Whether in in-your-face Hawaiian prints or more subdued pyjama stripes, the short-sleeved look feels ideal to have some fun in whilst being taken sartorially seriously.

The summer shirt at large is known for short sleeves and florals. Of which Reiss approves. But there’s something about that effortless open Camp-collar on top of this that signals confidence, just the right amount of playfulness, and feels new, every season.
