MAKING THE FIFTIES MODERN

10.05.14

The glamorous 1950s have been huge inspiration for us this season, and while this golden era is something of a boomerang in fashion – its shapes and silhouettes constantly swing back into vogue – here at Reiss, we constantly crave the new, so our interpretation has a modern twist.

Here’s how.

SHORTS

A summer staple and certainly a poolside must-have, a great pair of shorts will see you through summer holidays abroad and sun-filled days on home territory. Ours sit high on the waist a la 1950s, but rather than pairing them with a preppy crop top, we’re taking things up a notch with textured tees, sexy bikini tops and heels.

FULL SKIRTS

Full and feminine or sleek and wiggly, skirts in the ’50s took on one of these two guises, and despite our love for the pencil skirt, we’re coveting fuller, La Dolce Vita-fuelled shapes this summer. We’re keeping things modern by adopting a very simple approach; clean lines and an unfussy colour palette.

BIKINIS

Despite our usual bikini shapes erring on the side of itsy-bitsy, this summer, our collection looks to Fifties’ shapes and adds a few inches of fabric. Taking cue from high waist bottoms and longline tops, our bikini doesn’t scream retro, but rather whispers it thanks to the fuller briefs, lingerie-inspired top and gingham check.

DRESSES

The fit and flare silhouette is a popular one with our designers and customers alike thanks to its simple, flattering and feminine shape. Indicative of the 1950s, these nipped waist, flared skirt dresses are synonymous with the glamour of the decade. Ours boast clean lines, graphic prints and subtle design details to keep it fresh.
