It’s almost that time of year where we get dressed up and head out to the year’s most formal occasions; be they to eat and drink al fresco, to witness nuptials of our nearest and dearest or have a flutter and cheer on a horse.

Not always considered the most sartorially creative of seasons, it’s hard to visualise wedding attire and the like without neat little shifts and a fascinator popping into view, but it needn’t be like that.

Take our latest shoot, The Invitation. Set in a modern light-filled house in London, it follows a girl and her guy dressing up and heading out for the day. Their relationship status is unclear as is their exact destination, but what is clear, is that they’re not following a fashion formula when it comes to occasionwear.

Our creative team took cue from our SS14 campaign, with reflections, the outdoors, a voyeuristic feel and a subtle hint of retro styling setting the tone of the shoot.

Feminine but loose hair, soft make-up and Fifties-esque accessories, the girl is wearing pastels, black, layered white and a few prints in many of the looks, exuding a modern, fresh approach to dressing for occasions.

Prints appear on dresses in simple shift or fit and flare shapes instantly lending them a contemporary feel. And rather than warming these dresses up with blazers, our stylist chose to toughen them up with a biker jacket in buttery soft leather – instantly more laidback but still ultra-luxe.

Pastels and whites were addressed with sharp and expertly-cut trouser suits, which with their streamlined shape and cropped lengths leave plenty of room for statement shoes and textured bags to add depth and richness.

And, don’t be afraid to experiment with black. It’s simultaneously bold and elegant, and works beautifully in dramatic maxi dresses or slick blazers.

The emphasis is on breaking free from the formula and carving your own occasionwear dress code.
