Kids Co Interns: Meet Albin

02.08.12

Our Reiss/Kids Co. Internship scheme is well underway and we’ve been gradually introducing you to those behind the scheme and those involved in it.

Last week we met Ben, who’s interning with our menswear design department, and this week, we cross the office to the accesories design room and meet Albin, another Reiss/Kids Co. mentee.

Albin has answered our fast fashion Q&A, along with his mentor, Jemma Ruddock. Check out their answers! You can follow our interns’ progress here and at Grazia Daily, and look out for #KidsCoInterns updates on twitter.

REISS LIVE: OPENING CEREMONY

28.07.12

Well, how brilliant was that? The morning after Danny Boyle’s Olympic Opening Ceremony extravaganza and the mood in the UK, and across the world (if the snippets we’ve gleaned from the international press are to be believed) was resoundingly triumphant. Representing the UK from the green and pleasant land of old, through the grime and grease of the industrial revolution, via the Beatles and James Bond and segueing into the present day, Boyle’s ceremony was as idiosyncratic and humourous as we had hoped.

You MAY have spotted that Reiss made a cameo appearance as well; our Rebbecca dress from A/W ’12 was spotted one one of the performers towards the end of the evening’s spectacular show.

It can’t have escaped your notice that the Olympics is now only a day away, and as such the excitement surrounding the forthcoming event is reaching fever pitch here at Reiss HQ – not least because the Olympic torch has just passed Reiss head office on its journey to Stratford. And we went out to see it!

Kids Co Interns: Meet Ben

25.07.12

In last week’s Grazia, we launched our Reiss/Kids Co. Internship scheme – an initiative between Reiss, Kids Company and Grazia which sees four young people from challenging backgrounds gain a role as a Reiss intern across our press, visual merchandising, womenswear accessory design and menswear design departments.

We were lucky enought to grab exclusive chats with Grazia Editor-In-Chief, Jane Bruton and Kids. Co. founder, Camila Batmanghelidjh last week, and now it’s time to meet the first of our four interns – Chikara, Charlene, Ben and Albin.

Ben, who’s working  in menswear design, has answered our fast fashion Q&A, along with his mentor, Jennifer Allen. Check out their answers! You can follow their progress here and at Grazia Daily, and look out for #KidsCoInterns updates on twitter.

Coachella – festival style

23.04.12

One of the most stylish girls from our L.A. store spent this weekend at Coachella festival. Armed with little more than a car boot full of clothes and the Instagram app, she’s captured the style and spirit of the world’s most fashionable festival for us.

Here are some of our favourite snaps – doesn’t it look amazing? We’re not sure if it’s the soft hazy tone of the pictures or those enviable Coachella sunsets, but we are very jealous.

Next year, the London office has to be there too…

Vintage Heaven in LA, Jet Rags

10.04.12

For those of us who pay shopping ‘homage’ to everything vintage, and by ‘homage’ I really mean ‘love’. By painstakingly visiting shop after shop to find that unique, individual, and cherished item that makes our wardrobe a little more unique and satisfies that vintage shopping hunger.

Well, you’re in luck if you’re in Los Angeles this weekend, because LA has the vintage-shopping equivalent of heaven in the form of ‘Jet Rags’. Jet Rags is the biggest vintage store we have ever seen. The clothing is simply unbelievable and mixed with the LA crowd a thoroughly entertaining experience.

Tug it out in-between a mix of vintage lovers, designers, transvestites, and fashionistas for that rare special item. Amongst the vintage garbs hanging from every available space are inviting leather jackets, sensational classic jeans and dresses and bags for every occasion. This really is a treasure trove of vintage garb.

Set within the recognized vintage area of La Brea it sets itself aside from its competitors for the sheer quality of clothing and vast range. Not to forget to mention Dollar sale Sunday where almost everything sells for a dollar. This really is vintage heaven…

Mad about Don being back…

27.03.12

Here at Reiss we are huge Mad Men fans. All that pensive smoking, hard drinking and snappy suiting in a hazy Sixties wash has us transfixed for forty five minutes on a weekly basis.

However, we’ve had a Don-shaped hole in our television viewing for far too long – until tonight. Don and the rest of the debauched cast are back for more.

And, with season five jumping into the late-Sixties, we’re expecting the suits to step up a notch as fashions become a little more experimental and colourful.

We can’t wait – in the meantime, here’s a little sartorial inspiration courtesy of Mr Don Draper, sauntering on-screen in his mandatory grey or black single-breasted suits, slim silk ties and neat pocket squares.

Mad Men Season 5 is airing on Sky Atlantic tonight at 9pm.

Meet the stylist

17.03.12

Meet Gail Holland, our in-house womenswear stylist, as we talk travel, the campaign shoot and L.A. highlights.

What books did you read pre-trip for inspiration?
I dug out my Helmut Newton biography just before the trip, which is amazing. I’m also reading Patti Smith’s bio at the moment too.

What did you wear to the airport?
I wore the Reiss Lola knit in pale blue marl with a white tee from New York, a pair of black fluid vintage trousers, my Converse, a vintage leather handbag and Molecules perfume.

What are your travel essentials?
I think every girl’s (and some guy’s) staple – Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour cream, sleep mask, ear plugs, a big soft poncho – which looks like a horse blanket – from Topshop and Lavender oil (a few drops on bedding helps me to sleep).

What was on your L.A. soundtrack?
The Horrors, Florence and the Machine – Ceremonials, Kavinsky, Lana Del Ray, PJ Harvey, The Chromatics.

What films did you watch on the plane?
We Need to talk About Kevin, Midnight in Paris and Beginners.

Who are your L.A. icons?
The photographer, Amanda Marsalis, has a tumblr site which posts saturated fly-on-the-wall style shots which look retro at a glance but she’s cleverly played with colour. It reminds me of hot L.A. days.

What was your favourite L.A. moment?
Styling the shoot at such an amazing location – the Goldstein house.

What’s your favourite piece from the shoot?
The Lady printed silk blazer – it has such a great combination of prints, I would wear it with skinny jeans and a vest as a statement throw on.

What did you wear while in L.A.?
The Reiss Suki fluid denim trousers worn with ballet pumps and a tee or the white sleeveless Petuna Shirt and Lola knit.

What were your favourite meals in L.A.?
Fabulous fish at the Chateau Marmont, avocado and pancetta salad at The Ivy which was never ending! Steak mignon wrapped in parma ham with lentils at The Little Door – my first steak in over a year – and it was amazing, Taco Bell (had to be done) and french toast with turkey bacon and bananas at the Figtree, Venice Beach.

What were your favourite L.A. tipples?
The best coffee I’ve had in a while at Intelligencia in Abbott Kinney, A Vampire Cocktail at The Spare Room Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel which involved gin, soda, lime and jalapaneo.

Did you spot any celebs on your trip?
I spied Hugh Laurie on the flight to L.A. from Heathrow, Kid Cudi at the Roosevelt Hotel and Vampire Weekend by The Mondrian’s pool on my last day.

Vintage shopping in L.A. – Go Golyester

14.03.12

While shooting in L.A. we couldn’t resist a spot of shopping – especially in the city’s infamous vintage stores. Our first stop was along La Brea Avenue at the legendary Golyester.

With celebrity customers like Victoria Beckham, Dita Von Teese and Elle Fanning, it’s a one-stop shop for men’s, women’s and children’s vintage clothing.

Established in 1976 by Esther Ginsberg, it’s believed the name Golyester came about by friends swooning over Esther’s vast vintage collection, gasping “Golly, Esther” at her wondrous finds.

With all items hand-picked by Esther herself, it’s a must-visit for vintage fans, where you’ll discover rails of hidden treasures and quirky keepsakes sure to raise a smile.

Personally, we couldn’t get enough of those beautiful antique lace dresses…

The big breakfast

06.03.12

It’s a well known fact that nothing sets you up better for the day ahead than a big breakfast. It’s something we simply don’t do enough in London, and instead a steaming mug of tea and hurried bowl of Frosties at the desk ususally does the trick.

However, when our brand team hopped over to L.A. for our campaign shoot they brought back tales of stacked French toast, layers of fresh fruit and endless pots of tea at Figtree’s Cafe on Venice Beach.

Healthy(ish) and in the sunshine long breakfasting looks so appealing. You can almost feel the sun on your back and the toast in your tummy. Almost…

Reiss likes to party

28.02.12

Last week we threw open the doors of our flagship Barrett Street store along with Premier Models (and their endless stream of beautiful people), and invited the fashion industry’s most stylish movers and shakers, to our London Fashion Week wrap party.

With bubbles, beers and a rather delicious rum bar, guests drank, schoomzed and danced the night away while perusing our fabulous new collection.

It was a great night and the perfect end to our Reiss Live coverage. Here are a few pics to tell the tale of our fashion week party.
