HOW TO DRINK: WHISKY COCKTAILS

During our recent Personal Tailoring Evening our friends at Chivas Regal were on hand to treat guests to their aged whiskies which provided the perfect thirst quencher for some of the city’s most stylish gentlemen.

Inspired by the evening, in pursuit of the perfect tipple for the modern man we visited Opium in London’s Soho where we asked Drinks Master Bruce Govia to devise the ultimate cocktail menu. The result was a masterclass in mixing which delighted the palette.

The Rob Roy Reiss Chivas Regal

THE ROB ROY

The Rob Roy cocktail was first created in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, it owes its name to an operetta of the same name which was premiering at the time. The Rob Roy is a mix of Chivas 12yr Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters that delivers a burst of sweet, earthy and spicy flavours.

(N.B: The Waldorf was the first hotel to offer room service, which in turn created a new trend that would become a global standard.)

Method

Pour all ingredients in to a mixing glass and fill with ice until the glass is either half or three quarters of the way full.

Stir steadily for about 20 seconds before double straining the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with a lemon twist.

Enjoy.

blood & sand

The Blood and Sand cocktail was created in 1922 to mark the Rudolph Valentino movie of the same name. The movie itself focuses on a poor boy who ascends from his humble beginnings to become a famous bullfighter. At the pinnacle of his fame, the bullfighter begins a passionate affair with a beguiling widow, despite himself being married and from a different world.

In tribute to the film’s themes, The Blood & Sand cocktail blends together flavours which do not seem instantly complementary, however, much like the film itself, once the combination is experienced its chemistry is clearly evident. The smokiness of Chivas 12yr, along with the acidic sweetness of the fresh orange juice, sweet vermouth, and Cherry Heering bring out the very best in each other. The result is a unique drink which blends effortlessly.

Method

Add all the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice.

Shake, and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.

Zest an orange peel over the drink then discard the remains.

The Modern Reiss Chivas Regal

Don’t be deceived by its name, this drink was the new, modern thing at the turn of the 20th century. An instant classic, over 100 years on the drink shows no sign of waning in popularity, and deservedly so.

Method

Add the lemon juice and sugar to a shaker and stir.

Add the remaining ingredients and fill with ice.

Shake the mixture and spray your serving glass (we recommend a coupette) with absinthe.

Double strain the mixture from the shaker into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with a maraschino cherry to taste.

Chasing the Dragon Reiss Chivas Regal

CHASING THE DRAGON

Chasing The Dragon is a dessert style cocktail created at Opium to bring out the beautiful flavours of Chivas Regal 18y/o. The smokiness of the whisky and dark chocolate under notes are ramped up by the combination of ingredients and the method and delivery of the drink.

Method 

Add the whisky, chocolate liqueur and orange liqueur to a glass.

Fill the glass with ice and stir.

Decant the mixture into a cocktail glass.

Fill the glass with smoke, cover and allow to infuse.

Uncover the glass and enjoy the cocktail with a cube of dark chocolate garnish.
